Tasmania by Region

While Tasmania may look small on the world map; about the same size as Ireland, Switzerland or West Virginia in the United States, if you look a little closer, our regions are as diverse as those who occupy them. Being an island, every region is never far from a spectacular coastline, yet the landscape and lifestyle can differ considerably.

Those looking for bustling city life, are best to turn their attention to our harbourside capital of Hobart. Almost half of Tasmanians live here, and those moving from big city living will appreciate its liveliness coupled with a liveability that no longer exists in capital cities of the world. This is city living where bikes replace bullet trains, commutes don’t allow diving into a chapter book and locals can head off to the beach or mountain often under half an hour from home.

Hobart too busy? Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city and, in many respects, feels like a big country town – metropolitan, with a small-town feel. With its inner-city gorge and fringed by vineyards, Launceston offers a neat balance between town and country. The North East is packed with mountain biking adventure trails and some of the country’s best golf courses.

If you love your produce straight from paddock to plate and life by the ocean, take a look at what the North West has to offer. Find out about the burgeoning advanced manufacturing scene and why investors have turned their attention here.

From the rugged far west to the clear water of Tasmania’s east, the busy Hobart streets to the old-world charm of a country town, there’s a match for most on this petite island.
