Education in Tasmania

Schools in Tasmania

You can choose from a wide variety of schools in Tasmania. Our education system runs from kinder (pre-school) through to year 12. These are generally grouped in two schools: primary schools (year Kinder-6), secondary schools (year 7- 12, sometimes referred to as high schools). In some regional areas, primary and secondary schools can be combined into district schools. Years 11-12 are also offered separately in some instances and are referred to as colleges or senior secondary schools.

Families and students can choose from government schools or non-government schools provided by the Catholic and independent schools sector.

Government schools

Tasmania has a number of government school options throughout the state, ranging from primary schools (K-Year 6) to senior high schools (year 11 & 12). The Tasmanian system looks a little different to other states, splitting junior and senior high school.

Tasmanian Government Schools all deliver the Australian curriculum. The quality of the education speaks for itself: 98 per cent of Tasmanian students who apply for university receive an offer, which is a higher percentage than any other state or territory in Australia.

Non-Government schools

Non-government schools (also known as Private, or independent schools) are privately funded and governed. While mostly privately funded, independent schools also receive support and funding from the government. There are 38 Catholic schools and colleges and 29 independent schools in Tasmania. By offering a range of private and public schooling options, we empower parents to make informed decisions about their child’s education.
